I just purchased a new Imac desktop, and had Apple load my old PAF file as an attachment folder for future use. I am trying to decide what will be the very best software for the future, and have done some homework, narrowing the field to Apple's Reunion, MacFamily, and PAW. Whatever I pick, I will need to download all my current PAF (several thousand names with info), preparing to implement the New Family Search program. Can anyone summarize their best advice?

I just purchased a new Imac desktop, and had Apple load my old PAF file as an attachment folder for future use. I am trying to decide what will be the very best software for the future, and have done some homework, narrowing the field to Apple's Reunion, MacFamily, and PAW. Whatever I pick, I will need to download all my current PAF (several thousand names with info), preparing to implement the New Family Search program. Can anyone summarize their best advice? First, remember that whatever Mac genealogy program you choose to use, you will need to convert your PAF file to a GEDCOM for import into the new program. If it's a PC PAF file, you will need to run PC PAF 5 to export the GEDCOM. You can run PC PAF on a PC or under a virtualization program on your Mac such as Parallels. On the other hand, if it's a Mac PAF file, you will need to run Mac PAF 2.3.1 on an old Mac under OS 9. I have both PC PAF under Parallels on my iMac, and Mac PAF under OS 9 on my eMac, so if you don't have access to either you can send me your file as an attachment to an email and I will do the conversion for you. Second, Reunion ($100 at the Apple Store) is the best known Mac genealogical program and has most every feature you could want. I suspect it will give you the most direct import capability for your existing file, particularly if you are coming from PC PAF and have used events other than BMDs and used their source citations. PAWriter (free) is more aimed at the professional writer of genealogical treatises, but will do a great job if you are coming from Mac PAF (the starting point from which PAWriter was developed). Best regards, Howard

Ok , so I have a large file saved as a PAF file that I can't open on my I Mac using your PAW2U. It says the file is locked. If I purchase the Mac Reunion software will I be able to open it?

Hi, PAWriter will not open a PAF file (PC nor the old Mac version) directly. You must export the PAF file to a GEDCOM using the ANSEL or UTF-8 character set. Then transfer the GEDCOM to your iMac and import it into PAWriter. As to Reunion, I don't use it so I don't know. Probably you will have to do the export to a GEDCOM file for Reunion to import it. Best regards, Howard
