I recommend clicking "Yes" when asked "Include listed messages in notes?" at the beginning of a GEDCOM import. This is the default. Any problems detected during import will also be recorded in the appropriate person's notes as a tagged note. The tagged note will start with "!GEDCOM" and be followed by the problem message. Then you can choose More Tag menu > Tag People whose Notes Contain > Tagged Notes, go to each tagged person and make any necessary corrections.
I also recommend choosing File menu > Analyze > Linkage (or pressing command-K) immediately after the import. This will check for problems resulting from mal-formed GEDCOMs that can't be properly processed in PAWriter.
Also, please see the FAQ on "Importing GEDCOMs into an existing file."

It would be nice to have GEDCOM tag filters / translators (preferably user-definable). For example: I just tried importing a .ged from Reunion. Apparently, they use a non-standard tag for e-mail (EMAL). I'd like to be able to translate it to the standard one (EMAIL).

Check it out at homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pmcbride/gedcom/55gctoc.htm. In any case, I won't be adding GEDCOM filters/translators in this lifetime. Sorry. Best, Howard

Your welcome. I wrote PAWriter for my own use starting many years ago, and later decided to share it with anyone who might be interested. That's why it's free and unrestricted. Of course my time is limited and I don't have the resources to do much in the way of updates. Best, Howard Addendum:I note that 5.5.1 is a draft, not an officially adopted, standard. (FYI, the complete draft standard is also given in www.phpgedview.net/ged551-5.pdf). I have not made any real effort to go beyond the officially adopted 5.5 standard. I do support import of the UTF-8 character set but not the Unicode character set. ASCII is supported simply because it is a subset of the ANSEL, UTF-8 and Macintosh character sets. I do not support the ANSI (i.e., IBM PC) character set -- note the following statement on page 44 in the 5.5.1 draft standard: I think it's safe to say that the Unicode character set will never be a major factor since the UTF-8 character set is a much better choice and is now very popular. (In fact it is the character set used everywhere in MacOS X, although PAWriter at present only uses the characters that are common to the MacRoman character set.)

I am new to this site so I hope I have posted this correctly!!
I imported my GEDCOM files from PAF (1014 persons) & I can access them in the new PAW program with seemingly no problems. YET when I try to save this file to a CD it tells me there is system error 30 "Exception of class IOException was not handled. Application must shut down'"
Is there a corruption that I don't know about? I have not added any data since importing this file. Thanks for listening.
Carolyn Corey PS I also imported a separate 60 person GEDCOM PAF file which I was able to save to as disk with no error messages.

Hi Carolyn, Are you trying to save the file to a CD from within PAWriter? If so, that won't work; it must be saved to disk and burned to a CD from there. If not, then the GEDCOM may be malformed. Try to do a command-K on the file in PAWriter and see if there are any errors noted. Then you might send the GEDCOM to me as an attachment to an email so I can investigate. Best regards, Howard Update:Hi Carolyn I copied PAW2U and my data file contaning 45,000+ people into a folder. Then I burned the folder to a blank CD selecting the folder and using the Burn item in the right-click popup menu. No problem. Then I ejected the CD, inserted it again and copied the folder from the CD to the Desktop. Then I ran the copied data file in the copied PAW2U. No problem. I have a Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running 10.6 Snow Leopard, which includes the CD/DVD drive which came with the iMac. So nothing unusual in my system, just standard issue. I think you have some other problem in your system. You should try to find it since it might cause other problems with other programs later. Best, Howard

I don't use GEDCOMs much, so I don't remember how, but the Manual and the folk at ReunionTalk will help you do this. I don't quite know how you find out what PAWriter wants; but you can fix Reunion to confirm.

You can "find out what PAWriter wants" by checking GEDCOM 5.5 in the reference above. In any case, there is no more room for an email address in the PAWriter file structure without obsoleting the current structure -- something that's never been done and won't be. Best, Howard
