If you see a bunch of excess paragraph symbols in your notes that you imported from a GEDCOM, here is the reason why and how you can get rid of them:
The GEDCOM standard says use CONC tags to concatenate lines of notes that are broken over several lines of GEDCOM, and to use CONT tags to indicate line breaks. However, some older programs such as PC PAF just use CONT tags for both cases. That's wrong, but there it is.
Here's how you can fix that:
1. Choose Edit menu > Find & Replace in All Notes. Enter \r\r in the Find in Notes field. Check the Replace With box and enter \p in the field below it. Click OK. This will find any notes in any person on file that contain two consecutive line breaks with no text between them, and replace them with a paragraph break. If you checked the Tag those Found box, every person affected will be tagged so you can verify what happened.
2. Then choose Edit menu > Find & Replace in All Notes again. Enter \r in the Find in Notes field. Check the Replace With box and enter a space in the field below it. Click OK. This will find any notes in any person on file that contain the remaining line breaks, and replace then with a space, thereby combining them into the same paragraph. Which is what would have happened if PAF did what it should have. If you checked the Tag those Found box, every person affected will be tagged so you can verify what happened.
