I downloaded and installed today. When I tried to get into help (reference guide) I got a message saying that the file "index.htm" could not be found. I don't see index.htm anywhere in what I downloaded.

I don't see index.htm anywhere in what I downloaded. Index.htm is a file internal to PAW2U. I suggest that you download PAW2U again; there may have been a problem in transmission. Best, Howard

I tried what you suggested without success. I'm using a MacBook. I also downloaded to my MacMini, and "index.htm" is there just fine. On my second try with the MacBook I looked for the file in the drive before ejecting it, but couldn't find it. Should I copy it from the MacMini, create the path that I can see from the Mini, and see if that works?

On my second try with the MacBook I looked for the file in the drive before ejecting it, but couldn't find it. Should I copy it from the MacMini, create the path that I can see from the Mini, and see if that works? Let's see what we can find. On your MacBook, right click on the PAW2U.app (which I assume is in your top-level Applications folder) and choose Show Package Contents. You should see a folder named Contents. Look inside Contents. There should be a folder named Resources. Look inside Resources. There should be a folder named PAW2Help. Look inside PAW2Help. The PAW2Help folder should contain a file named index.htm, a folder named Reference, and a file named TOC.htm. Double click on the file index.htm and you should see the help file open up in Safari, as it should if you just had chosen PAWriter Reference Guide from the Help menu while running PAW2U.app. If the above is missing anything then please let me know what is missing. I assume you are running OS X 10.6.6 or later on an Intel MacBook, and downloading PAWriter version 102. If not, then that might be the problem. In a few minutes I will also reinstall PAWriter from my website to see if there is any problem there. Update: Reinstalled PAWriter version 102 with no problems. I'm running OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. Please make sure that you have only one copy of version 102 (or any other version of PAWriter) on your MacBook. If not, trash all copies other than the one you downloaded yesterday. And trash any aliases to those other copies. Be sure to open any data file from within version 102. Make sure that any data file is set to open in that version 102 using Get Info on the data file and make sure Open With is set to the version 102 in the Applications folder. That should clear up any problems with opening the data file with a double click. Best, Howard

I found the file in the PAW2Help folder, following the path you gave me, and the file is there. When I double click on it, it brings up the reference nicely. But when I try bringing it up from the program, either by clicking "reference" or getting to it from "help", it says it isn't there. I'm using PAW 102, as indicated by the initial splash when the program executes, and my version of operating system is OS X version 10.7.5 running on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB of SDRAM.
I notice from your website that you were born in 1933. I was born in 1938. I live in West Bountiful, Utah.
Thanks for all your help. I really like the program.

No one else has reported any problem like this, and I can't reproduce it either. Here's a little help on the Help: Go through the process again until the Reference Guide displays in Safari. Then choose File menu > Save As to create a web archive file that can be saved to say the desktop. Then you can refer to it there at any time. Alternatively, just make a copy of the PAW2Help folder say to your desktop, and when you want to refer to it, just open index.htm in the folder and leave it running. The PAW2Help folder is about 7 MBs and if you can receive an attachment of that size, I can send it to you. Hope this gets you the help you need. Best, Howard

Here it is years later, but I have the same problem with the reference index not opening. This problem seems to occur only in macOS Sierra. It goes away in macOS High Sierra. Here is a work-around. Click once on the PAWriter app (PAW2U.app). Right click (or control click) on the app and select Show Package Contents. Then open Resources > Reference > index.htm. You will see the Reference Guide. Choose File menu > Save As and save (it says Export As a webarchive) to the DeskTop. Now you can open the Reference Guide anytime by clicking on the webarchive.
