Hi I would like to get more information on RIN what they are and how they are used do they change when you delete some one or do they stay the same Cameron As in most genealogical programs, RINs are assigned automatically when a new person is entered. They are really just an index to where the program keeps the person's data, so they have no meaning outside of a given file. RINs are assigned sequentially. But when a person is deleted from the file, that RIN becomes available for reassignment to the next person added to the file. Except for this, RINs stay the same. However, if you have deleted people and you export the file as a GEDCOM, and then import the GEDCOM to a new file, the RINs will be assigned as the people are imported. Thus in this case they can change. If you export a file with NO deleted people, then the RINs will be the same when you import the file. The above is also true for FRINs (called MRINs in PAF), the family RINs. So RINs are very useful for quickly navigating to people, but serve no other useful purpose and have no meaning otherwise, and hence don't appear in reports.

Howard Thank you for the help I am still learning it get confusing with the different numbering systems I was thanking of using the RIN number for individual Id number like you said if you delete a person and export then import the file the RIN number is different so the RIN number would not work for individual Id number It's unusual to export and re-import the same file. So most of the time you can depend on the RIN. In any case, to find a person it's easy to just use command-F (or click on the Find Person button) and look for the person by name. Then double-click on that person's name to make that person the current person.
