I've finally sat down to use PAW2 only to find that my English ancestors are now embedded with a lot of Oberwinders and other very Germanic-sounding names. I've entered my names into Howard's example file (duh!). How do I start my own files? Thanks.

I assume you have copied PAW2X to your Applications folder, along with the Reference folder. To create your own file, start PAW2X. In the box that appears, click Create a New File. Add a person. Save the file to the Desktop or to the Documents folder, giving it a name you like such as MyFamily. Add people as you wish, saving the file occasionally. After you quit your session, you can startup again where you left off by double clicking your MyFamily file. Best, Howard

Thanks, Howard. Once I closed the example file, the box came right up when I clicked on PAW2. Good to go now! B

I had hoped not to have to ask for advice, but after 3 days, I give up! I've tried all the instructions but nothing seems to work. I started with my great granddaughter - no problem but trying to get the spouses together .. I just can't seem to do it. I end up with individual "persons". It doesn't look at all like the sample. They do have the proper numbers! Going to "add partner" doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks daizie

Say you start with entering your great granddaughter, call her A. You can add a partner for A and enter his info by double clicking on the Unknown partner in the family window. Then he will be defined. And in the same family window you can add their children. Then you can add parents and siblings of your great granddaughter. Then work up to you. And on up to your ancestors, one step at a time. This is basically the same procedure that is followed in all the other genealogy programs. Best regards, Howard

Sorry Howard. Thank you for your reply. I finally worked it out. I had made print outs of all the instructions (58 pages!) - read them all again and finally worked it out. Wonderful. I know I'm going to like this program. Just takes some time to adjust! Millie

I'm mulling over the ability and the effort rquired to combine the entries in the Reference Guide into one HTML file for easier study, searching and printing. We'll see. Best, Howard

I sk this question fully convinced that the answer is obvious and that I will feel silly. Nevertheless, my problem is that when Iturn theprogram on, I can only access one screen. I can enter data, and create relationships, but I have no access tothe main screen and main menus, including File.etc. .
How do I access that main screen?

PAWriter is very modal, just like the old PAF from which it was derived. For example, when you add a person, you fill out the fields in the Person window and then click Enter to return to the main window. You might scan through the Reference Guide which is available by clicking on the Reference button in the main window, or from the Help menu in order to get a general idea of how PAWriter works. Dear Howard,
Many thanks for your trouble. But I think I explained my problem inadequately.
I cannot access any page or screen that contains the basic menu--one with sub-menus such as "File" or "Preferences". Therefore, I cannot save a file in HTML. I get perfectly fine screens for input, and I do press Save when I am done, but what I don't know how to do is to go a screen or two "up". I can get pedigree charts etc., but the manual mentions,in great detail, how to menus such as FILE, and I cannot access that menu.
MANY THANKS.
Peter

Peter Hi Peter, Maybe you can give me a very concrete example and I can respond. In general, when you do something in the main window that opens another window, etc., you must close each window in turn to get back to the main window and do the things that the main window allows (such as access the File menu, etc.). That's what's meant by a modal programs; each window must be closed before another can be opened. Just like the old Mac programs and many old PC programs. Again, an example from you might help me explain further. Best, Howard

Dear Howard,
I guess a concise way of explaining my problem is this: I cannot access the main screen. What comes up when I start the program is what I think is called the navigation screen. So how do I get to the main screen. That's my question. There is no button or link on the screen I do get that can take me to the main screen.
The windows close automatically when I click on enter after adding a person. I then get back to a screen that has a menu of things like SAVE, REFERENCE, REMEMBER, DRAFT, TAG, etc. and presents a pedigree diagram. It has no FILE menu. I guess this is called the navigation window. On top it gives MacIntosh HD:Users:Pgrudin:Grudins.
If I close that window--by clicking the APPLE red dot--the whole program closes.
I am using a new MacBook Pro. I suppose it has the latest software.
This looks like a wonderful program. I thank you for providing it and for your help.
Peter

Peter Hi Peter, In your terminology, there is no "main" window. The navigation window IS the main window. Remember, unlike Windows, a window does NOT have a menu bar. The menu bar at the top of the screen (not at the top of any window) is the menu bar for the program. When you are looking at the navigation (main) window, the menu bar at the top of the screen has the File menu, etc. That menu bar at the top of the physical screen changes with each different program window displayed on the physical screen. Does that help? Best, Howard

This solves the problem. As soon as you told me that the menues I needed were not in any window, everything became clear. I am new to using a Mac. Many thanks..
