I used the "Delete the person" command from the "person" menu, and now I have an "Unknown" partner I cannot delete. "Unknown" appears in italics in a partner box, and "Unknown" appears as an option in the "Partners" drop-down menu. I want to eliminate this unknown partner altogether. Deleting the Family has no effect. What do I do?
I'm using the Mac version (81). Except for this glitch, I've had no problems at all. Great program!

If you have a family with an unknown partner, make the known partner the current person and the unknown partner his/her current partner. Then choose Person menu > Delete This Family. The unknown partner will disappear. If the deleted family had any children, they will be orphaned. Please let me know if you have any further problems. Best, Howard

Have done that. Still have Unknown partner, in both a box and the "Partners" drop-down menu.

Hi Michael,
Got the file and had no problem deleting the unknown partner. Sent the corrected file back to you.
I suspect that when you choose Delete This Family from the Person menu, and the confirmation dialog comes up asking if you want to permanently delete this family, you are hitting return (the default is No) so the family is not deleted. Make sure you click on Yes, or type Y.
The philosophy:
Good practice in program design is to require positive confirmation when you try to make a change to your data file that is difficult (or just inconvenient) to reverse. (That's true in nuclear attack codes as well!)
For example:
When you add a partner, PAWriter changes the data file structure immediately to make room for the new family. So it asks for confirmation before doing that. In this case the default is Yes because it's relatively easy to just delete the new family if that family is not wanted.
When you delete a family, the default is No because the deletion will lose any information already entered about that family and that information is not recoverable except by complete re-entry -- or by quitting without saving, then re-opening the unchanged file and re-entering all changes since the last save.
Best, Howard
