Hi,
I am getting to know how this program works and may have other suggestions but one that leaps out at me is that the reference uses Internet Explorer! IE hasn't been developed for years. Why do you still use it? I have a copy but I don't see why the reference doesn't just use the default browser to read the html you use for the reference.
Is it a matter of setting the creator code? I can change it myself* but I don't understand why this program uses IE. NO other program I have seen uses it these days (on the Mac) or has for years. (*I think I have done this but the program changes it back to IE!)
I'll add this too. Is it possible to make an illustrated map that shows EVERYONE in the database? It seems the only way to show a family tree is to draw a pedigree but that is very limited. I have seen your other advice on how to printout a full list of everyone but that doesn't apply to the "drawing" as it is done in the drawing of the pedigree. I realize it will be a challenge to print this total view but I'm sure some sort of method can be figured out to piece the various pages together.
Thank you.
Cheers,
John L

Cheers, John L Hi John, The creator code MSIE for Explorer is still there for compatibility with the OS 9 version of PAWriter. I think I will change that to udog for Safari within a conditional compile for the OS X version, since once in awhile somebody tells me about this. Meanwhile, pick an HTML file generated by PAWriter, do a Get Info, change Open With to Safari, and click Change All. From now on, any HTML file will open in Safari. As to a graphic map that shows everyone in the database, I haven't figured out a reasonable way to do this. A couple of weeks ago I saw a demo of a program (can't remember which) which does this in 3D. It was cool, but the effort to do that is beyond my means. If you have any idea of a simple way to show everyone in a database and how they are related, please give me a shout. It should include the complex relationships (e.g., cousins marrying) in a database with perhaps 50,000 or more people. Best, Howard

Thanks very much for the answers. I appreciate it.
I do wonder about "changing all" to the browser of my choice (or Safari as you suggest but I don't use Safari so in my case it wold be Camino) though. I don't want to change all .htms to Camino. I only want to change your IE file called ref.htm which is currently a IE owned/created file. I have changed it in the past (and just did now to confirm it) and PAWriter changes it back to IE!! In another post, you tell us that is the file that PAWriter uses to get into the reference. THAT is the only file I want to change the "creator" for.
My concern isn't for html files created by PAWriter as displays of my family tree. My concern is the reference you created.
So the dilemma continues.
My only idea for a drawing of the whole family tree is to have each corner of the printed (or more likely in my case, the saved pdf) page be numbered so that it would be easy to line them up once printed. Example: the uppermost left hand corner would have nothing on the upper edge or the left hand edge but would have "2" on the right hand side and perhaps 5 on the bottom, assuming the top row of pages was 4 pages wide. Numbers on each side would show you which page to put next to it on all sides.
How you code that, I haven't got a clue!
I can see that this could be challenging for large family records. Maybe an interim version could have the current version expanded by a few generations and include (horizontally, cousins, etc)
The drawing could be smaller than it is now, if it was legible when zoomed in, if that helps you add all those extra familys.
Not very scientific I know but that is how I picture it.
Many thanks.
Cheers,
John L

The ref.htm is regenerated each time the Reference button is clicked, so it is new each time and now it will launch Safari. No way at this time to tell it to use a different browser. I still don't visualize how one would show all the relationships graphically for a bunch of arbitrary relatives. Maybe you could draw an example and send it to me. Best, Howard
