Running the PAWriter on my Mac powerbook running OS Tiger, I get a high, unpleasant whine or buzzing noise associated with this program. PA Writer works fine on my desktop running OS Panther--no whine. Hmmm. Would like to get to the bottom of the problem as it is very annoying and the laptop is the comp I like to take along to the family history ctr when need be.

Hi Carol, I currently have no system set up with Tiger so I won't be able to look at this problem for a few days until I've setup Tiger on one of my machines. (I have an Intel iMac core 2 duo running Leopard and one running Snow Leopard, and an eMac running Panther. No whine or buzzing, and I'm running version 96 of PAWriter.) In the meantime, please tell me which PowerBook is running Tiger and which version of Tiger it is. Also tell me which version of PAWriter you are using on Tiger. You might want to also send me a copy of your data file as an attachment to an email. Best, Howard

Hi: Thanks for your immediate response: Here's my set up: Mac Powerbook G4 1.5 ghz running Tiger 10.4.8,using PA version 96. carol Hi Carol, Just setup OS 10.4.11 on a G4 and ran my enormous data file on PAWriter version 96. No whine or any other noise. Everything worked just dandy. Suggestions: Maybe your version 96 got corrupted. You might trash it and download a new copy from www.lanopalera.net/Genealogy/PAWriterU.dmgYou might also run disk utility to verify your boot disk, and if problems are detected, run it from your install DVD to repair your boot disk. You might also use Software Update to upgrade from 10.4.8 to 10.4.11. Other than that, I have no idea what might cause the whine. Sorry. No one else running Tiger has mentioned a noise problem. But in the unlikely event that something is weird in your data file, you might send me a copy as an attachment to an email so I can try it out. Best, Howard hmetcalfe@roadrunner.com

Hello again: Thanks for suggestions. I've tried running my disk repair utility after booting up from CD, but I get a message that only one volume of two is repaired. The second volume "invalid leaf record account" apparently can't be repaired with integral repair program on my disk. There was a suggestion prompt saying I should try another repair program. Do you know of an alternative repair program that might work or should I try erasing disk and starting over with the Cd's that I have for that comp? Thanks, Carol

Thanks, Carol Hi Carol, You have two volumes on your boot disk? Which one has the error? The one from which you are booting? In any case I suggest TechToolPro 5. Pricey at about $100 and you will need to upgrade to at least 10.4.9 (I suggest 10.4.11). See micromat.com/. System Requirements • PowerPC G4 processor or newer. • Mac OS X 10.4.9 or greater. • DVD-ROM drive. • 512 Megabytes RAM or higher. • Quartz Extreme graphics support. (Maybe.) They say these requirements may change with future updates. TechToolPro is the repair program I use. A repair program that I haven't used is Disk Warrior at www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/ for $49. They say DiskWarrior now ships on DVD instead of CD. Starting up from the DiskWarrior DVD requires a G4 867 MHz Mac or better with a DVD drive and a minimum 512 MB RAM. Best to read their system requirements section on their site. If you don't mind starting over, then go ahead and reinstall your system making sure you have all your applications and documents saved on some disk or CD/DVD to later restore if necessary. But not a pleasant task to do. Best, Howard

I'm having the same "high whine" problem using the program on my Dual 2.0 Ghz G5 PowerMac running OSX 10.5. The whine only occurs while running PAWriter. For example, I currently have several programs running. Using the Alt-Tab, I can switch to any other program without issues. Immediately when switching to the PAWriter window, however, the whine starts.
Any ideas?

You might read the entries in this thread above with carolmrl, the only other case of the whine, where there was corruption in her system. Best, Howard
