Q: What does tagging people do?
A: Tagging allows flexible selection of subsets of people in a file by marking them as members of the subset using a host of selection criteria. Selections include inclusion (+), exclusion (-) and intersection (*) of the set of people meeting the criteria with those already tagged.
An example of a tagging action is Tag menu > Tag People by Matching. Here people who match the one or more criteria entered in a template are tagged.
When a person is tagged, he or she is displayed with a bullet in front of his or her name. The number of people currently tagged appears at the bottom middle of the window.
Tagging is used for multiple purposes. One is find people which meet some criteria. Another is to select people who will be part of some action, e.g., to be exported to a GEDCOM file, to be included in a genealogical dictionary, to have family group sheets printed, etc. Tagging is also used to indicate which people have been imported from a GEDCOM file, to indicate which people have been changed in an action such as finding and replacing portions of notes, etc.
Tagging is one of the most powerful features in PAWriter, navigating and focusing on subsets of people in large data files. It replaces the old Mac PAF focus group with a far more flexible approach.
To move to the tagged person who alphabetically precedes the current person, click the Prev Tag button. Alternatively, press shift-tab.
To move to the tagged person who alphabetically follows the current person, click the Next Tag button. Alternatively, press the tab key.
To move to a tagged person by the person's name, choose Person menu > Find Tagged Person by Name (or press option-command-F). A dialog box appears listing all the tagged people on file. Scroll if necessary and click on the desired person. Details about the highlighted person are displayed to the left.
You can save the current tags for future reference by "caching" them. Choose More Tag menu > Cache tagged people. You can retrieve those tags by choosing More Tag menu > Tag Cached People, or switch the current tags with the cached tags by choosing More Tag menu > Exchange Tagged People with Cached.
See the Refence Guide topics for various menu items for additional information about tagging.
