Q: How do I get rid of unused names? They keep showing up on the listing of possible problems!
A: In the main window, make sure that everyone in your file is tagged (choose Tag menu > Tag All People, or press command-=). Export everyone in your file to a GEDCOM for PAWriter by choosing File menu > Export GEDCOM > of Tagged People for PAWriter (or by pressing command-X). Then import the GEDCOM into a new, empty file. The unused file names will be gone.
Technical note: PAWriter keeps all parts of person and place names in a binary tree for quick lookup. For operational efficiency, PAWriter does not keep track of which names are no longer used. When you export a GEDCOM, only the used names are exported. So when you re-import the GEDCOM into a new, empty file, the unused names are gone.
The only drawback is that the people remembered in the recall menu are also gone, so you will have to re-remember them after importing.
Also, if there were deleted people in the original file, they are also gone, and new RINs will be assigned to the imported people. Ditto for deleted families and their FRINs.
If there were no deleted people in the original file, the RINs will be the same. Ditto for no deleted families and their FRINs.
