Q: Why can't I have the two spellings "Leroy" and "LeRoy" in the same file?
A: This is a technical limitation in PAWriter as it was in the old Mac PAF. The difference is that PAWriter will alert you to this limitation whereas the old Mac PAF just silently kept the last spelling entered.
Technical details:
Each part of a name, person or place, is stored in a PAWriter file just once, in a binary tree of names, and pointed to from wherever it occurs in a person or place. This significantly reduces the size of the file. Thus, the "Lawrence" in "James Lawrence" and in "Lawrence, Kansas" are both pointers to the entry for "Lawrence" in the binary name tree. The search for the name "Lawrence" is case-insensitive, as it is for "Leroy" and "LeRoy". Only when found is the case checked, and changed if requested. So only one spelling is permitted.
One result of this strategy is apparent when you choose Tag menu > Tag People whose Names Contain, or you choose Tag menu > Tag People with a Place Containing. In both cases, the list that appears contains all the names on file.
