I am using PAW2X on a G4 power book running OS X 10.4.11. I have downloaded and installed the program and entered three persons into a family file. I was able to initially save the family file to a file name of my choice. Today when I opened the file, made some changes and tried to save the file, I got the dialog box suggesting I open preferences and check the radio button to "Trash back up after save". I did this as suggested and now get a error code stating "File Hergert-bkp is busy" and I am unable to save my changes. I then unchecked the radio preference button and saved the window, the problem persists. I checked the file list for PAW2x and no file named Hergert-bkp was in the file list. I have tried to rename the file under save as, but each file name I choose give a "is busy" error. Any suggestions as to what is happening? Thank you, I like the program but cannot understand this glitch.

In the Documents folder? In any case, I suggest you try this. On the desktop, do command-F to find files named Hergert. If you find any others than your originally saved file, trash them and empty the trash. Then logout, restart your Mac and login again. Try to launch your original Hergert file. Please let me know what happens. Best regards, Howard

The family file is saved in the same folder I created in my Applications folder to hold the PAW2X application. Command-f shows only one file named hergert, the back up (bkp) file does not appear on the list. I did empty my trash, logout, restart and login. I have downloaded and installed version81. When PAW2X version 81 is reopened after the restart the same problem persists. I have also trashed PAW2X preferences from my user library, deleted the trash and restarted the machine. Thank you for your reply.

OK!, Thanks that worked, I moved the only copy of the Hergert file to Documents. The bkp was put into the trash, as it was supposed to. So, now the $64 question - why does this work in the documents folder and not stored with the other files in the application folder, other family files stored in the application folder work OK when saved. I appreciate your brain power on the solution!

So, now the $64 question - why does this work in the documents folder and not stored with the other files in the application folder, other family files stored in the application folder work OK when saved. I appreciate your brain power on the solution! Excellent! For $64, the Application folder is accessible across users on the same machine, so generally is protected from any one user changing a file within it. My "busy" message catches other errors when saving a file, and this is one of them. Document files such as Hergert should therefore be in the Documents folder, or on your Desktop which is different for each user. Why other document files saved in the Applications folder can be changed is way beyond me. (BTW, you don't have to use the preference to trash the backup file now.) Anyway, I'm glad the problem is solved and you can continue building your family history with PAWriter. Please let me know if you have any other problems. Best, Howard

Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully no other problems will appear, your help menus and this forum seem to answer most questions. Thanks for the support availability!
