I just noticed (by fluke) that if one uses the Tag by Matching, and includes a nickname, that it won't find it unless you put the quotes around it. Is that on purpose?

Hi Curtis, Yep, that's on purpose. The only way PAWriter knows a name is a nickname is that it's enclosed in quotes. That's true when entered and when searched for (and it's printed that way before the surname in reports). Seemed natural, and frequently appears that way in real life documentation. In addition, the GEDCOM standard, page 6, says "A nickname can now be included on the name line by enclosing it in double quotation marks." Pretty suggestive of how nicknames can be represented. Best, Howard

Shoot. There are certain relatives that are known much better (by me and others) by their nicknames, but I sometimes forget that it is a nickname (in some cases, it's obvious, but in others, not so much. Is there a way to tag by both a nickname and actual name, if one can't remember if it is a nickname or not? Perhaps two entries in the match by tag?

Hi Curtis, Let's say you are trying to find Billy Smith and you can't remember if Billy is a nickname. You have some other info about Billy so you want to use Tag by Matching. In the template for Tag by Matching, enter Smith,Billy opposite Name. Then choose Name from another line and enter Smith,"Billy". Tag those people. They will include anyone named Smith,Billy or Smith,"Billy". Two entries for the same characteristic are OR'd, that is, either or both will meet the criteria for tagging. Howard
