PAWriter version 81 was posted on Friday, 27 June 2008.
The following changes were made:
Fixed an error that prohibited saving general notes.
The wording in the list of possible problems for children born less than nine months apart has been corrected.
The list of current postal codes for the Canadian provinces and the U.S. insular possessions and freely associated states has been updated, and the State popup menu has been reorganized.
The Reference guide topic Basic Data Entry > Place Names has been updated to include the following:
Download and install Typinator ($30), TextExpander ($30) or TypeIt4Me (shareware, $27). These programs allow you to type abbreviations of your choosing and the abbreviations will be immediately expanded into the full text of your choosing.
Typinator can be found at www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18028/typinator, TextExpander can be found at www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19147/textexpander and TypeIt4Me can be found at www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6908.
I've used TypeIt4Me going back to OS 9. For example, typing sic and a space, comma or period in my notes immediately enters [<sic>] which then appears in reports as [sic], and typing asw and a space, comma or period in an abstract of a census entry immediately enters attended school within the year. One could define WAU or wau followed by a space, comma or period to expand to Western Australia. And so on.

This is how PAWriter sutomatically detects and expands postal codes within the text of a place field or when asked to expand postal codes in a selection within notes. Please note that the expanded place is the one that is saved in the data file and appears in reports. Here's a tip for users who wish to abbreviate place names that aren't in the State popup menus, or who wish to abbreviate almost anything on data entry:
PAWriter looks for two adjacent uppercase letters that match one of the entries in the State popup menu. It only considers two uppercase letters that are adjacent to "non-word" characters (i.e., characters that are not a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a digit or an underline) or are adjacent to the beginning or end of the field. PAWriter then replaces the two uppercase letters with the full state, territory or province name.
Within a place field abbreviations for County (Co), Parish (Par), Township (Twp), Church (Ch) and Cemetery (Cem) when followed by a comma (or a period and a comma) are also expanded.
For example, if you enter "NE City, Otoe Co, NE", it will be expanded to "Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska".
This automatic expansion also occurs when a place field is imported from a GEDCOM.
The expansion is a convenience for those using North American postal codes, since it only includes postal codes for the U.S., its insular possessions (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), its freely associated states (Micronesia, Marshall Islands and Palau) and the Canadian provinces. Other place names will have to be spelled out in full to avoid any possible erroneous expansion. For example, Western Australia, abbreviated as WA, shoud be spelled out to avoid becoming Washington. (However, aa a convenience for Australian users, Australian states and territories are included without postal codes at the end of the State popup menu.)
The only time a postal code will be displayed in a PAWriter window is when the place name needs to be abbreviated to fit on a line, such as in the box for a person in the main window. This occurs only in the last field of a place name and, for Canadian provinces, also in the next to last field if needed to fit. (This abbreviation may also occur in a few reports, such as a pedigree chart.)
