When I "Mark Tagged People as Living..." and then "File" > "Write HTML" > "Register..." and choose to "Suppress data for descendents marked living", they show up as "May Be Living" and not "Living".
And then if I save the file, close PAW2U, open the file again, mark other people as living, and then "Register..." again, the people I had previously marked as living are no longer marked as living.
Also, is there a way to tell if a person is marked as living other than to create one of the reports?
(PAW2U version 92.)

Also, is there a way to tell if a person is marked as living other than to create one of the reports? (PAW2U version 92.) First, the reports use the phrase "Many be living" since if you use More Tag menu > Tag People who May be Living there is no certainty that all of them are dead. In any case, some people who you mark as living may soon die, so the phrase is a safer phrase than just "Living." Just a bit more generic than other programs. Second, if you mark more people as living, say by changing their death code in the Person window to living, then save the file and close it, then open the file, all the people marked living previously and all the people added as living will still have their death codes set to living. I can't replicate any case were the previously marked people are not set to living. If you are using Tag People who May be Living again when adding people who may be living and you don't want to change those you marked manually, I suggest you use Include These People when you Tag People who May be Living again. I normally just use More Tag menu > Tag People who May be Living followed by More Tag menu > Mark Tagged People as Living whenever I want to update. Third, to tell if a person is marked living, just go to the person and look at the death popup in his/her person window. You can also use More Tag menu > Tag People with Death Entered As > Living and then click on the Find Tagged Button to see a list of all people with the death popup set to living. I hope this helps, but let me know if you have more questions. Best, Howard

How do I find the "death popup" in the person window that tells me if a person is marked living? If I go to the person window, it just has fields to enter in the person's information, a button to enter notes, buttons for Title and State, and Cancel and Enter.

How do I find the "death popup" in the person window that tells me if a person is marked living? If I go to the person window, it just has fields to enter in the person's information, a button to enter notes, buttons for Title and State, and Cancel and Enter. Look in the DIED section of the window. The first thing you see, just before the field for entering the date, is a popup menu that is usually set to "Date:". Press that popup and you will see various options: Date, stillborn, d. infancy, d. young, deceased and living. Release the popup over the option you want. Only the Date option allows entry of a date. Read about this in the Reference Guide under the topic Basic Data Entry > Dates. By the way, the only reasons for actually using the living option are: 1. You want to use the option to "suppress data for descendants marked living" in Registers or "suppress data for people marked living" in Ahnentafels; or 2. Starting in version 93, you want to use the preference item "Exclude dates of birth and baptism of living people from reports" to help prevent identity theft when you distribute, post or publish reports. If you want to do one of the above, please read the Reference Guide topics More Tag menu > Tag People who May be Living and then > Mark Tagged People as Living. That's what I use to automatically set the Death popup to the living option for all people who qualify according to my algorithm for figuring out who may be living. Maybe i'll detail the algorithm in this space later. Best, Howard

Here is a video of the problem. (Best viewed fullscreen at 480p.) I open the PAW2U file, show that John Doe is "living" and Jane Smith is "Date:". Then I tag Jane Smith as living, and John Doe reverts to "Date:".

Then I tag Jane Smith as living, and John Doe reverts to "Date:". If you are marking people by setting their death popup to living, why even use Mark Tagged People as Living? That's redundant and note in particular that the alert box that appears says "Untagged people already marked living will be unmarked." So that doesn't work. Either manually mark people as living or use the automatic Tag People who May be Living followed by Mark Tagged People as Living. As I mentioned earlier, you should only use living if you intend to suppress info in reports. Best, Howard

If you are marking people by setting their death popup to living, why even use Mark Tagged People as Living? That's redundant... If you'll recall from the first message in this thread, I wasn't using the death popup. Are you recommending that I not use the "Mark Tagged People as Living" option? If so, why have it at all? It seems dangerous, especially when I have to read the whole paragraph to discover that it has the side effect of marking untagged people as undefined. If you could remove the side effect, I think it would improve usability. And then you wouldn't get this question again. :-)

No, I'm suggesting that you do what I do, use the automatic Tag People who May be Living followed by Mark Tagged People as Living. That takes care of everything in one swell foop, and should do it as far setting yourself up to suppress info on people who may be living in reports.
In version 94, these two menu items will be eliminated and their functions combined as File menu > Analyze > Set and Tag Living People.
