Hi - We have recently started to use PAW2U but on using iDisk to store the files they seem to have lost their association with PAW - I have tried re-associating them but PAW then seems to view them as GEDCOMS instead of PAW files and then gets a not correct gedcom format message - we also get a System Error 45 when we try to open a file that is still associated with PAW. Can you help? Why does PAW not use a file suffix such as .paw to associate files? For info I have just created a test PAW file that works OK on my desktop and then moved it to my iDisk and now get System Error 45 when I try to access it. Thanks Terry Webb

Thanks Terry Webb Hi Terry, I haven't used iDisk so I haven't had this problem. No one else has reported this problem but perhaps no one else uses iDisk (it seems that there are a thousand or more users of PAWriter). I've added .paw as an accepted extension for PAWriter data files and recompiled the program. You can download the beta version 96 of PAWriter from: www.lanopalera.net/Genealogy/beta/PAWriterU.dmgand see if the problem still occurs. I suspect it might but please let me know. Thanks. Best regards, Howard P.S. Version 96 also makes changes to the Census window for the 1940 and later censuses. (The popup census year will automatically appear on 1 January 2012.) I may make further changes before releasing version 96 in November.

Thanks Terry Webb Some info on why the old type and creator codes are still valid, as well as extensions and the modern day UTIs (Universal Type Identifiers): You might read www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/09/22/inside_snow_leopards_uti_apple_fixes_the_creator_code.htmlwhich tells you that application program "bundles" contain Info.plists (Information Property Lists) which tie various kinds of data files to the application in many ways. More info on application bundles and info.plists can be found in developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/CoreFoundation/Conceptual/CFBundles/AboutBundles/AboutBundles.htmlAll of this tells me that the problem with iDisk has nothing to do with the absence of extensions, but as I mentioned earlier the new beta PAWriter version 96 specifies .paw as an acceptable PAWriter data file extension. I still don't recommend using it though it won't hurt. In any case, as Dilger says at the end of the first referenced article above, you can always use "the Finder's Open With menu, drag and drop app launching, or set a permanent per-item default "creator" app for opening a selection of documents by using the Get Info panel." Best regards, Howard

Hi Howard - I tried Update96 with .paw and as you thought it still didnt work. When I try to open a PAW file stored on my remote iDisk I still get PAW Exception Error 45. The full error message is "An exception of class IOException was not handled. The application must shut down." Is it something to do with the process used for opening a file? (I'm an old software programmer!) When I copy the file back to my desktop it opens correctly with no IO errors. I am using iDisk as we have two computers and need to access the same synced file on both. Thanks Terry

Maybe move it to your computer, make changes, move it back? Best, Howard
